Read the text carefully then do the activities.

Trade has always meant more than trading goods.Through trade , new ideas have passed from civilization to another. For example the Phoenicians have traded with everyone , their alphabet quickly become known in the west and in much of Asia.

After the Greeks started their colony at Alexandria, it became a meeting place for different cultures. It had a great library , and this held the knowledge of the ancient world especially of Ancient Greece. The years passed. Greece itself became under the Rome’s power.Much later, Rome fell too,and the Dark Ages reached across Europe. Most ancient knowledge disappeared ,but in Alexandria the library still stood. Then Isam reached Egypt.Arab scholars were soon studying the knowledge of the Ancient World. For the next 800 years cities like Baghdad and Istambul were great centers of knowledge.

Trade along the silk and spice routes passed through the Islamic world. So ideas and technology moved between there and the East. With this system , mathematics became much easier than before .It was very useful for traders like the Arabs , and today the whole world uses it .

Because the Arabs were great sailors, they also needed to be map-makers.About 910 years ago , the Moroccan Al –Idrissi put together all the geographical knowledge of the East and the West and produced a world atlas with 70 maps.

Trade brought new technologies too.Paper-making was a very important one. The Chinese invented it 2.210 years ago, but they kept it as a secret from the Europeans. Why was paper so important ?                                        THIRD TERM EXAM

PART ONE : READING AND INTERPRETING(14points)

In many parts of the world people do not hesitate to engage in activities that do not comply with the basic patterns of ethics .The absence of legal structures to control their business and the spread of poverty and illiteracy in their land encourage the birth of all sorts of unlawful practices.

In Asia, Africa and also in South America the widespread usage of child labour by merciless employers and the expanding trade in drugs and narcotics dominated by powerful groups are vivid examples of the barbarous features that take grip of human societies. Moreover, the extending manufacture of all sorts of forged and imitated goods without any respect either to the statues protecting patented products and their inventors or the regulations required for their safe use.

We also find that bribery and embezzlement of public funds by scrupulous individuals take alarming proportions in many nations. At the same time the unauthorized sale of fire arms and the marketing of suspicious medicines whose consumption is proved harmful for the sick have become intensive operations that are carried out by international organizations that no authority is able  to check and to penalize.

All these transgressions (violations) to law and morality weaken the resources of the state and impair the social condition of the inhabitants because  of tax evasion the generate in every country. Worse than that they enable to their authors to handle the clever strategy of laundering  their billions of dollars through lawful channels where no suspicion will be raised about cruelty through which they have been amassed and even the death of thousands of defenseless creatures they have caused.

Read the text carefully then do the activities.

Today, in developed nations schools no longer represent the only source where the young can have access to knowledge. With the progress  of technology , the opportunities to acquire learning have widened considirably. The chances for all to extend their understanding in various topics are available outside the pedagogical intitutions. They are provided through a multitude of resources such as television  channels, mass media, public libraries and internet sites. Among their advantages we find not only immense treasures of updated facts but also the possibilty to benefit from their services at a relatively low cost.

However, despite the competition they face, schools offer exceptional assets in many areas and still remain an ideal environment for the acquisition of the qualities that pupils must gradually cultivate through their evolution into adults. It is in contact with their class-mates that the young succeed in learning how to behave inside their groups and the manners to adopt to get integrated in them.It is only when they are supervised by their teachers that they discover their true capacities and whether or not they are making any progress. For many of them the classroom acts as a real life contact where they have the possibility to measure themselves with the others in every aspect and where they get motivated so as to become better than their peers.
